Your practical test lasts around 40 minutes. Here's exactly what happens — from the moment you arrive at the test centre to the moment you get your result.

Test day nerves are completely normal. One of the best ways to manage them is to know exactly what will happen before you even arrive. Here is a complete walkthrough of what to expect on your DVSA practical driving test day.

Before You Arrive

Make sure you bring your provisional driving licence photocard — without it, your test cannot go ahead and you will lose your test fee. Arrive at the test centre at least 10 minutes early. Your LessonDrive instructor will usually meet you there and conduct a short pre-test lesson on the local routes to warm you up.

At the Test Centre

You'll check in at reception and wait in the waiting area until your examiner calls your name. The examiner will ask to see your provisional licence and confirm your details. They'll also ask if you suffer from any medical conditions that may affect your driving.

The Show Me Tell Me Questions

Before you start driving, the examiner will ask one Tell Me question — you answer verbally. For example: "Tell me how you'd check the tyres are correctly inflated." Then, during the drive, they'll ask one Show Me question — asking you to demonstrate something while driving, like operating the rear windscreen wash/wipe. Getting both wrong counts as just one minor fault.

The Drive (Around 40 Minutes)

The drive is divided into sections including normal driving in traffic, an independent driving section (following road signs or a sat-nav for around 20 minutes), and usually one or two set manoeuvres chosen from: parallel park, bay park (forward or reverse), or pulling up on the right and reversing. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.

The Result

Back at the test centre, the examiner will give you your result. If you've passed: congratulations — your examiner will complete your pass certificate on the spot. If you haven't passed, the examiner will go through your driving faults carefully and explain what needs improvement. Either way, your LessonDrive instructor will be there to support you.

Pass Marks

You are allowed up to 15 minor (driving) faults. A serious fault or a dangerous fault results in an automatic fail. Common reasons for failing include not checking mirrors effectively, poor observation at junctions, and hesitation at roundabouts — all things we work on throughout your lessons.
