The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional lessons for the average learner, but the real number depends on your ability and how regularly you practise.

One of the most common questions we hear at LessonDrive is: "How many lessons will I need?" The honest answer is: it depends. But here's everything you need to know to plan your learning journey effectively.

The DVSA Average

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the average learner needs approximately 45 hours of professional driving lessons combined with around 22 hours of private practice. However, this is very much an average β€” we regularly see students pass in fewer hours, and others who need a little more time.

Factors That Affect How Many Lessons You Need

How often you practise: Learners who take lessons consistently β€” two per week β€” tend to progress faster than those who have one lesson every few weeks. Regular practice keeps skills fresh and builds confidence steadily.

Private practice: If you have access to a car and a qualified supervising driver (a full licence holder aged 21+ with 3+ years' experience), private practice between lessons can significantly reduce the number of professional lessons needed.

Your starting experience: Some learners come to us having already driven on private land (farms, car parks etc.) and pick up car control quickly. Others have never sat behind a wheel β€” both are completely fine, but lesson count will differ.

How you learn: Some people are naturally quicker to pick up new physical skills; others are more cautious and take longer to build confidence. Neither approach is wrong, and your LessonDrive instructor will adapt their teaching style to suit you.

Typical Lesson Counts by Type

Complete beginner: 40–60 hours of professional lessons is a reasonable expectation.

Some prior experience: 25–40 hours.

Intensive learner: Our intensive courses can get some students test-ready in as few as 15–20 hours if they already have prior experience and are strong learners.

Our Advice

Don't focus too heavily on the number of hours. Focus on the quality of each lesson and listen to your instructor's honest assessment. At LessonDrive, we never stretch out lessons unnecessarily β€” we'll tell you clearly when we think you're ready to test.
